Sasha Kulak is an amateur photographer, who was born in Vitebsk, Belarus. Now she lives and studies in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation. Being a child she used to move from one school, art-studio to another and it brought in Sasha the zeal to travel and visit other places; but it also evokes the melancholy in her, if there are no journeys for a long time. It was a real pleasure for us to take an interview with Sasha Kulak and we wish you a pleasant reading and viewing of Sasha Kulak photography.
AP: Sasha, it’s very nice to meet you and thank you for coming out to give us an interview. We hope you will enjoy answering our questions today. So let’s get started. Could you please tell me what got you engaged in photography?
Sasha: Three years ago my sister gave me a film camera for a trip, so it all started then. I did not know what to do with the figures and rings on the lens and it seemed to me all the cool random things. 🙂 А When I got my first pictures, I realized what I really liked in photography: all the pictures I took can be kind of memory cards which you can always share with your friends who were close to you when you were taking these photos.
AP: What a great start! That’s amazing when you can gift somebody’s a piece of your art. Do you have any formal education in photography or were you self-taught?
Sasha: I am a self-taught photographer. At first I was just interested in the methods of film photography and then I started learning about how to properly position people or objects in the photo. I gradually get new knowledge in photography.
AP: What kind of styles you prefer to work in?
Sasha: When I was taking pictures of everything that I found attractive, I eagerly wanted to take pictures of people, but I was afraid of them. When I learned how to make portraits, I realized that there is nothing to worry about and on the contrary, it is much easier than finding an interesting composition without the presence of the person in the picture.
AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use to take your pictures?
Sasha: I use a digital camera Canon EOS 500D. Sometimes I take pictures with a medium format film camera, but in recent years I use it rarely. My main requirement is all camera lenses should be with a good aperture.
AP: What you consider yourself as a professional photographer?
Sasha: I think photography is just a hobby for me. And I don’t know how to cultivate it. Perhaps, I’m not really aiming for it.
AP: I think it’s never late to learn. By the way, do you have a dream project? What is it?
Sasha: I love bright natural colors, so would love to travel to Asia and take pictures of people and their lives.
AP: That’s a great dream and we wish it to definitely come true. Is there anybody or anything that gives you inspiration?
Sasha: When I photograph people I fall in love with them for a short time and I show all the most beautiful things that I could see in them during those moments. That inspires me a lot!
Sasha, thank you very much for giving us an interview and sharing us some interesting facts of your biography. We wish you continue inspiration, new great ideas and amazing success in all your endeavors. To learn more about Sasha Kulak photography please visit her personal 500px page.
