It was a real pleasure for us to take an interview with Esteban Palazuelos and learn some interesting facts of his biography. We wish you a pleasant reading and viewing of Esteban Palazuelos photography.
AP: Esteban, thank you very much for finding the time to give us an interview and tell us more about your creative life. Could you please share with us what got you involved in photography?
Esteban: I began taking pictures in a creative way when I was 19 years old and I was living in the UK. The green landscapes, the fog, the gloomy light drive me to take a crap compact camera I owned at that moment and register all that. Back then I discovered the form of expression I was looking for and I haven’t stopped creating images since then.
AP: That’s great you were inspired by the surroundings. Do you have any formal education in photography or were you self-taught?
Esteban: When I got back from the UK, I took some classes in a little academy downtown Madrid, which mainly I use to know people and talk about photography. Also I learnt to manage a B&W laboratory I set up. This was long before digital photography appeared, so it was great to be able to develop my own images with the precise finish I looked for. After that I studied a bit more, but when I really learnt something were taking thousands of pictures by myself.
AP: I agree with you, Esteban, self-practicing is our best teacher. What genre are your photos?
Esteban: The main subject of my images is people, in portraits, fashion…but always it’s about people. I love doing fashion because usually it’s a way to combine a personal work with a committed work.
AP: That’s absolutely true. How would you describe your photography?
Esteban: I always try to do something different, I mean, nowadays we’re intoxicated by so many images we are exposed to, mainly by internet, and it’s hardest than ever to be original, because you have access to the production of images of the whole world, that’s the reason I’m quite critic with myself and my work, and all I produce must be special. I love photography and I’m tired that the 80% of images I see are crap, copies or copies of copies… Something I’ve learnt from music it’s rhythm, and I try to apply that to my images; some time composing an image it’s like composing a song.
AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use to take your pictures?
Esteban: Right now I work with professional cameras and lenses by Canon. And depending on the type of work, I shoot medium format too, usually Hasselblad HD’s. I usually do the digital post-production of my images by myself. It takes a lot of time but it worth it. If I can or if it’s a personal project I still shoot film with my old Hasselblad.
AP: Cool! So film photography is still alive. This is very good! Do you have any dream project? What is it?
Esteban: Doing what I most love for living and it’s a dream come true, after that there’re no limits.
AP: We definitely wish all your dreams to come true! What is the formula for success in your activity?
Esteban: If you’re talented enough, perseveration is self-confidence and is the way to achievement. Also be in the right place at the right moment helps.
AP: Is there someone who supports you in your creativity?
Esteban: Of course, photography it’s not a lonely art. You depend on many people to do your work, and without the support of my girlfriend, my two years old daughter and a few colleagues photographers, stylists, make-up and hair artists…it wouldn’t be easy to keep going.
Esteban: Tell us three lessons you believe are really important for every photographer?
Esteban: You have to take risks, never settle down and always be yourself.
Esteban, thank you very much for giving us such interesting interview and sharing your creative life story. We wish you great success, fresh ideas and of course to make all of your dreams to come true. To learn more about Esteban Palazuelos photography feel free to visit his personal website.
