Vivienne Mok was born in New York and grew up between Hong Kong and Paris. Currently, she lives and works in Paris for most of her time. When we first saw Vivienne’s shots, we were captivated by their tenderness, beauty, and professionalism. We couldn’t wait any longer and of course, contacted Vivienne to know more about her creativity. We are very glad now to share this interview with Vivienne Mok and wish you pleasant reading.
The First Steps in Photography
AP: Vivienne, it’s great that you agreed to give us the interview. Please tell us about your first photos. What did they look like?
Vivienne: They were probably landscape/object pictures. But my first photographs concerning fashion were quite moody, very melancholic, less romantic and soft, they were more about an atmosphere, a bit heavier than what I do now.
Education
AP: It’s great that you found your personal photography style. Do you have any formal education in photography or were you self-taught?
Vivienne: I have no training in photography; I am completely self-taught. I do have a background in fashion and styling, though, as I studied fashion design and worked for a French fashion house before I moved on to photography.
AP: I must say you are a very talented photographer then. By the way, what genre are your works?
Vivienne: I guess portrait and fashion photography.
AP: How would you describe your works?
Vivienne: They are romantic, feminine, personal, dreamy, sensual, and natural.
Equipment and Techniques
AP: Yes, the pictures are really so. Vivienne, what kind of equipment and techniques do you use to create your photos?
Vivienne: I use Canon EOS 5D Mark II. 50, 24, 35mm, 1.4ft. Natural light. Adobe Bridge for selection and Photoshop for retouching.
AP: And would you consider yourself as an expert in photography?
Vivienne: Of course not! I still have much much more to learn. Actually, there are so many functions on my camera that I don’t even know about…
AP: Oh, I think the most important thing is your taste and of course love to photography, and that’s what you definitely have. Do you have a success formula in your activity?
Vivienne: There isn’t a formula for success, but one needs to believe in her/himself.
AP: Is there someone who supports you in your creativity?
Vivienne: I am very grateful to be able to do what I am doing now and for the support of people close to me.
Thank you, Vivienne, for your time and your interesting answers. As you see, the most important thing is to love what you do. It was a pleasure for us to take the interview with Vivienne Mok, and we wish her much success and inspiration. More information about Vivienne Mok photography you may find on her site.
