Sebastian Stan was born on August 13, 1982, in Constanța, Romania. His pianist mother chose his name to honor the renowned composer Johann Sebastian Bach. When he was two years old, his parents separated. At the age of eight, Sebastian and his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi, relocated to Vienna, Austria, where she continued her career as a pianist after the collapse of Communism in 1989. Four years later, they moved to Rockland County, New York, following his mother’s marriage to the headmaster of a local school. Sebastian was brought up in the Romanian Orthodox faith.

During his education in Rockland, Sebastian participated in various school plays, including Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac, Little Shop of Horrors, Over Here!, and West Side Story. His passion for acting was further nurtured at the Stagedoor Manor summer camp, where he performed in numerous productions. This experience inspired him to pursue acting more seriously, leading him to apply to several university acting programs. He enrolled at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he had the opportunity to study abroad for a year at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. Sebastian Stan’s acting journey commenced with a role in the 1994 film 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance. His career gained momentum in 2003 when he appeared on Law & Order. Following this, he took on roles in films such as Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, The Architect, and The Covenant. In 2007, Stan secured a recurring role as Carter Baizen on the television series Gossip Girl, a character he portrayed until 2010. He also played the lead role of Jack Benjamin in the 2009 series Kings.

2010-2011: Breakthrough and Marvel Cinematic Universe

In 2010, Stan expanded his repertoire by starring in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller Black Swan and the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, where he played the antagonist Blaine. Stan reprised his role as Bucky Barnes, now known as the Winter Soldier, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), marking the first film under his Marvel contract. In 2015, he appeared as Joshua Brummel in Ricki and the Flash and portrayed NASA scientist Dr. Chris Beck in Ridley Scott’s The Martian. He also acted in The Bronze as Lance Tucker. Disney announced the Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in April 2019, featuring Stan and Anthony Mackie. The series premiered on Disney+ on March 19, 2021, and concluded on April 23, 2021. In May 2019, Stan joined the cast of the spy thriller The 355, which was released in 2022.

He also starred in the thriller film Fresh, receiving a nomination for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries.

In 2023, Stan starred alongside Julianne Moore in the Apple TV+ and A24 thriller Sharper. Looking ahead to 2024, he is set to portray Donald Trump in the biographical drama The Apprentice.

Sebastian Stan is dedicated to supporting various charitable organizations that aim to improve the lives of others. He contributes to Our Big Day Out, a nonprofit in Romania that works to enhance the quality of life for children.
