First Steps in Photography

AP: Your first works. What did they look like?

OD: I’ve been fond of photography the whole all my life, but more intensively since I was 17 after my graduation from the high school. It all started of taking pictures of me, but I quickly got bored of it and I decided to take pictures of my friends. By that time I had finished Photoshop course, so I could take pictures and then somehow retouch all this stuff. Well, the sources of my inspiration at that stage were foreign websites of young photographers, but who were more experienced than I was.

Education

AP: Do you have any formal education in your sphere or were you self-taught?

OD: I completed the course of “Basis of Image” at one of the most famous art-schools in Kiev, they lasted a month, and then I had a lot of practice, attempts and mistakes, in fact, they are still going on.

Photography Genre

AP: What genre are your works?

OD: My genre is a portrait, portrait photography. Over the three years of experience I took pictures of children, girls, guys, in other words I tried to work with everyone. With regard to specific directions in photography, I’ve been shooting weddings for two years already – it really fascinates me, especially the creation of romantic, fairy-tale images of young people that captivate not only the couples, but other people. I improve myself in the field of fashion and lookbook photography, I try to add to my works interesting camera angles, poses, “gloss” and that is the main difficulty for me now. But if we take my 3-year effort, we can understand that I tried myself in almost everything: I was a photographer at graduations, weddings, christenings, concerts; I was taking pictures of children, adults, love-stories, studio portfolios and much more.

AP: How would you describe your works?

OD: Very often people call my pictures delicate and airy; I really know how to make them so, but now I try not to focus only on this way of photo editing. By the way, photo editing is an important factor in my art-works. In general, if you take all my pictures, you will notice they have a good warm color palette; since the days of art-school, chromatics was my hobby-horse. Warm and gentle color mix is my style.

Equipment and Techniques in Photography

AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use?

OD:  I have Nikon D90 so far. That is my second camera, in fall or winter I’m planning to change it, but it seems to me that camera is not a decisive factor; the main thing is the ability to make maximum use of the equipment that you have. My appliances are Nikon D90, Nikkor 50 mm 1.8, Nikkor 85 mm 1.8, Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5

AP: Would you consider yourself as an expert in this sphere?

OD: I think so. Why do I think so? It is based on number of my clients who advised my services to their friends. I work with people, if a person likes my approach, process and finished result it does mean something.

AP: What is your success formula?

OD:  My formula for success is the daily work on myself and a product that I do. As if it did not sound rude 🙂 Success can be achieved if you believe in yourself, your strength, you develop, and you are passionate about what you do. If you are not keen on your activity – it won’t work. I think a lot, meditate, read various smart books about how to shape customer loyalty, positioning of myself and so on. I also look through a lot of pictures, photos, since there are talented people who have something I can learn. My works are published in magazines and books, a couple of times I had an experience of exhibition on the basis of my institution, but it’s only the beginning in fact. In 2010 I won second prize in photos at the “Expo-star”. My plans for the future are to develop myself as a brand, organize exhibitions and equip own studio.

AP: Is there someone who helps you in your creativity?

OD:  My team is an integral part of my job. I just love the team work! It brings up the final result to a higher level, as it is the accumulation of multiple talents! It inspires and makes me to move on. I’m trying to work with trusted people who understand my vision and I, respectively, do understand their ones.
