First Steps in Photography

AP: Your first works. What did they look like?

OD: I’ve been fond of photography all my life, but more intensively since I was 17 after high school. It all started with taking pictures of me, but I quickly got bored and decided to take photos of my friends. By then, I had finished the Photoshop course, so I could take pictures and retouch all this stuff. Well, the sources of my inspiration at that stage were foreign websites of young photographers who were more experienced than I was.

Education

AP: Do you have any formal education in your sphere, or were you self-taught?

OD: I completed the course “Basis of Image” at one of the most famous art schools in Kyiv; they lasted a month, and then I had a lot of practice, attempts, and mistakes that are still going on.

Photography Genre

AP: What genre are your works?

OD: My genre is portrait photography. Over the three years of experience, I took pictures of children, girls, and guys; in other words, I tried to work with everyone. Regarding specific photography directions, I’ve been shooting weddings for two years already – it fascinates me, especially the creation of romantic, fairy-tale images of young people that captivate couples and others. I am improving myself in the field of fashion and lookbook photography. I try to add exciting camera angles, poses, and “glosses” to my work, which is my main difficulty now. But if we take my 3-year effort, we can understand that I tried myself in almost everything: I was a photographer at graduations, weddings, christenings, and concerts; I was taking pictures of children, adults, love stories, studio portfolios, and much more.

AP: How would you describe your works?

OD: Very often, people call my pictures delicate and airy; I know how to make them so, but now I try not to focus only on this way of photo editing. By the way, photo editing is an essential factor in my artwork. In general, if you take all my pictures, you will notice they have an excellent warm color palette; since my days in art school, chromatics has been my hobby. My style is a warm and gentle color mix.

Equipment and Techniques in Photography

AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use?

OD:  I have a Nikon D90 so far. That is my second camera; in the fall or winter, I’m planning to change it, but it seems to me that the camera is not a decisive factor; the main thing is the ability to make maximum use of your equipment. My appliances are Nikon D90, Nikkor 50 mm 1.8, Nikkor 85 mm 1.8, Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5

AP: Would you consider yourself as an expert in this sphere?

OD: I think so. Why do I feel so? It is based on the number of clients who advised their friends of my services. I work with people; it means something if a person likes my approach, process, and finished result.

AP: What is your success formula?

OD:  My formula for success is the daily work on myself and the product that I do. As if it did not sound rude 🙂 Success can be achieved if you believe in yourself, your strength, you develop, and you are passionate about what you do. If you are not keen on your activity – it won’t work. I think a lot, meditate, and read various intelligent books about how to shape customer loyalty, positioning myself, and so on. I also look through many pictures and photos since there are talented people who have something I can learn. My works are published in magazines and books; a couple of times, I had an experience of an exhibition based on my institution, but it’s only the beginning. In 2010, I won second prize in photos at the “Expo-star.” I plan to develop myself as a brand, organize exhibitions, and equip my studio.

AP: Is there someone who helps you in your creativity?

OD:  My team is an integral part of my job. I love the teamwork! It raises the final result to a higher level, as it is the accumulation of multiple talents! It inspires and makes me move on. I’m trying to work with trusted people who understand my vision, and I, respectively, appreciate their own.
