Michael Schougaard Svane is a designer with fresh and minimalistic look at things. He was actively engaged into a design education and had high expectations for the future. After writing his thesis and graduating with top marks in product design, Michael decided to obtain a Bachelor Degree of Industrial Design, Furniture. It was a pleasure for us to take an interview with Michael Schougaard Svane and we are happy to share it with you. Enjoy reading and remember sharing is caring 😉
AP: Michael, tell us about your first works. What did they look like?
MSS: Well I have always been quite creative and loved playing with LEGO and creating my own cars and stuff. When I got older I started willing to make a lot of stuff better. I got solutions and a million of ideas. I am happy when I design something. That’s why I 100% headed in that direction – to follow my dream. I feel very inspired by nature. Minimal constructions are seen all over in our nature. I try to implement that in my design. And that actually works very well with the Mensa6 table.
AP: Do you have any formal education in design or were you self-taught?
MSS: I love to learn and love to be better at what I do. I’ve been learning all my life and have a Bachelor in Industrial Design with “Furniture” as my specialty.
AP: How would you describe your works?
MSS: My work is different from others. It stands out from the crowd. I like to add something extra or something new. For example the legs on the Mensa6 table that you mount without any screws or fixings. Only the force of nature keeps the legs in fixed position.
AP: What is the most grandiose project you used to work on?
MSS: That must be FourWorks – a lounge chair with a build in workstation.
AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use to create your works?
MSS: I sketch and use Rhinoceros and SolidWorks.
AP: Please share with us your thoughts about future tendencies in design?
MSS: I believe that we will see much more of minimal constructions. Nature’s own way is using the minimum of materials to design the strongest and necessary construction.
AP: What is the formula for success in your activity?
MSS: Go your own way and believe in your ideas and don’t always take no for an answer.
AP: Is there someone who supports you in your creativity?
MSS: My close friends have been and are a big support. They made me believing in my natural way of thinking design.
AP: Would you like to wish something to your readers and AstrumPeople?
MSS: I wish you a fantastic beautiful day!
