Emma Lee Bunton, or commonly known as Baby Spice during her successful stint as a member of the Spice Girls, is the youngest among all the members of the group. The charming and cute blondie, who used to sport pig tails and babydoll dresses, performed with the other Spice Girls, namely Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie C (Sporty Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham née Adams (Posh Spice). With a handful of singles under their belt plus numerous awards and recognition, it is evident that Bunton along with her members helped shape the face of 90’s pop music.
Born 21st of January 1976, Emma Lee Bunton grew up in a nice and warm household in North London. When she was eleven years old, her parents split up and Emma stayed with her mother along with her younger brother Paul James. While the effects of parents breaking apart might create a traumatic experience to children, Emma managed to survive the whole process since she’s already involved with several gigs such as modeling and commercial casting. With her entrancing appeal, not to mention the training she received from the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, soon she found herself on TV shows such as EastEnders, The Bill, and To Play the King, giving her an early taste of performing in front of millions of viewers. Other than her stint in the television industry, she also starred in a public safety announcement film by the British government about fire safety.
In order to compete with the number of 90’s boy band groups that infiltrated the mainstream charts like the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, a management team consisting of siblings Bob and Chris Herbert and Lindsey Casbon decided to go up against the grain and form an all-girl pop group. Unfortunately, Bunton missed her first shot at the auditions and almost lost her chance to become a member of the female pop group. But fate might’ve been on her side as one member of the group left because of personal problems, leaving them scouting for another member to fill the gap. Pepi Limer, who knew Bunton prior to the auditions for the Spice Girls, asked the Herbert brothers and Casbon to give her another shot. With her infectious personality and powerful stage presence, the Herberts were instantly impressed and asked her to join the group. Because of her bubbly personality and signature pigtails, she earned the moniker “Baby Spice” and started her journey towards stardom.
Debuting with the single ‘Wannabe’, the Spice Girls became instantly loved not just by the British fans but listeners from all over the world, as well. Aside from becoming a multiplatinum hit, ‘Wannabe’ also peaked at number one in many European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. After their debut single, the success of the group continued with more singles like ‘Say You’ll Be There’, ‘Stop’, ‘Too Much’, and so much more. Other than chart-topping hits, they also bagged several awards from different bodies like the American Music Awards, MTV, Brit Awards, and so much more. However, like any other good thing, the group’s journey must come to an end. On December 2000, the group announced that they’re going on hiatus to pursue their solo careers.
Hitting The Jackpot Post-Spice Girls
After her successful ride with the rest of the Spice Girls, Bunton went on to pursue her solo career, spawning several hit singles such as ‘What Too You So Long’, ‘Free Me’, and ‘Downtown’. Aside from her solo recording efforts, she also appeared in several television shows like The X Factor and many more. However, her post-Spice Girls wouldn’t be complete without mentioning her greatest role: being a mother and a wife.
Since the year 2000, Bunton has been in a relationship with Jade Jones, member of the defunct pop group Damage. Their relationship gave them two sons: Beau Lee Jones, 6, and Tate Lee Jones, 2. While Bunton has been busy with her career as a multimedia personality, her role as a mother never wavered, giving her the chance to be recognized by an online bingo company as a role model for mothers.
Just this year, online bingo operator Foxy Bingo hailed the Spice Girl, as their Celebrity Mum of the Year after the British bingo gaming populace had spoken in favor of her. Garnering one-third of more than 10,000 voters who cast their bets, Bunton bested other celebrated British moms like Michelle Heaton, Claire Richards, Myleene Klass, Una Healy, and former groupmate Victoria Beckham.
“I couldn’t ask for more this Mother’s Day than to have my two boys around me and this award on my mantelpiece. The best thing about winning FoxyBingo Celebrity Mum of the Year is that it’s chosen by YOU, the British public. I’m so honoured that thousands of you picked me, thank you to everyone who voted! This award is extra special because this is the most important thing – being a Mummy!! So here’s to you fabulous Mums this Mother’s Day,” Bunton told the press.
With a successful career on and off the microphone, Emma Bunton is a clear-cut example that sugar, spice, and everything nice is the perfect combination to stardom. We hope you have enjoyed reading Emma Bunton biography and her amazing success story.
