BriAnne Wills

BriAnne Wills is an American photographer from Portland, Oregon living in Kiev, Ukraine. BriAnne graduated from the University of Oregon in 2007 with a degree in Journalism. It’s been a pleasure for us to take an interview with BriAnne Wills and learn some interesting facts of her biography. We wish you a pleasant reading and viewing of BriAnne Wills photography.

AP: Hi BriAnne! First, I’d like to thank you for finding the time to answer our interview questions. That’s a great pleasure for us. We hope you’ll enjoy answering our questions. Please tell us what got you started?

BriAnne: I was playing around with photography in college – making my roommates and friends pose for me – and one of my journalism professors saw my work. He encouraged me to join the Journalism School’s magazine as a photographer, so I did, and I ended up shooting the cover story. After graduating college I continued to take photos and work on my portfolio, landing random jobs here and there. Eventually I started taking it more seriously and it evolved into a career.

AP: Great start! Do you have any formal education in photography or were you self-taught?

BriAnne: I’m self-taught. It’s been mostly trial and error up until now. A lot of error. These days I am very comfortable with my camera and I know how to achieve certain results, but that’s after years of consistent practice.

AP: What genre are your photos?

BriAnne: My focus is fashion and portraits. I’ve dabbled in most genres, but they bored me. Fashion keeps me interested and allows for more creative freedom.

AP: How would you describe your works?

BriAnne: Feminine and edgy.

AP: Your work is very beautiful and we really like them. What’s your favorite project you worked on so far?

BriAnne:  I have an ongoing “diary” series that I really enjoy. Those are personal shots of my life traveling and living abroad. When I look through those photos I’m reminded of some really amazing experiences.

AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use to take your pictures?

BriAnne: I use a Canon 5d and a Yashica T4. I shoot with available light and a reflector (sometimes) and indoors I use hot-shoe flash. I don’t like to use a lot of equipment.

AP: Yeah, we noticed that your pictures look quite natural. What is the formula for success in your activity?

BriAnne: I try to shoot for online or print magazines as often as possible. There are so many these days and many of them have a large readership, which is great for exposure and often leads to another shoot.

AP: Is there someone who supports you in your creativity?

BriAnne: My husband is my biggest supporter. He wants nothing more than to see me succeed. He works hard so I can pursue my passion and he has never told me to get a “real job”. Also my parents who share every photo and link I post on Facebook.

AP: Tell us three lessons you believe are really important for every photographer?

  • Shoot constantly – when you’re not working for clients, work on your personal stuff.
  • Share your art. Even if you’re unsure about it, the feedback you get from your peers is always important.
  • Network! Network! Network! It’s the best way to get more work and to meet the right people in the industry.

BriAnne, thank you so much for sharing interesting story with us! We wish you continued inspiration, brilliant success and many new wonderful shots. To learn more about BriAnne Wills photography, please visit her personal website.
