Alena Krupetskova is a professional photographer, who was born and raised in an ordinary family in Moscow, Russian Federation. While studying at school, she got interested in photography. Alena loved taking portrait pictures of her friends and potted plants on the table. Later she graduated from the modeling school and in eighteen years Alena realized that photography is something she’s interested in. It was a real pleasure for us to take an interview with Alena Krupetskova and learn some interesting facts of her biography. We wish you a pleasant reading and viewing of Alena Krupetskova photography.
AP: Alena, we are happy to see you today here. Thank you very much for coming out and finding the time to give us an interview. We are be happy to share your story on photography with our readers. So what got you started?
Alena: My passion in photography began with the purchase of an entry level digital camera. I specifically chose the camera with adjustable shutter speed and aperture settings. Trying to shoot with natural light, I realized that I want to control the lighting. After getting some piece of advice from practicing photographers, I decided to buy a standard halogen spotlight as a budget version of lighting. Then I invited couple of aspiring models for photosessions. And while taking portraits of models I was attracted by how much one and the same person could be different, depending on the make-up, haircut and lighting. I discovered the boundless world whose creator is photographer.
AP: What a great start! Perhaps it was the moment when you noticed how much photography is versatile. Do you have any formal education in photography or were you self-taught?
Alena: I haven’t been attending any photo art schools or anything else. I am entirely self-made. I have studied online lighting schemes, considering the work of the photographers that I like and was studied lighting schemes for different types of faces and figures, considering the models pose in pictures. I believe that we need to cultivate a taste, filling ourselves like a bowl with the necessary vision. I was interested in glossy images of famous magazines, but also liked a meaningful photography art. I have filled myself with these images and managed to combine gloss and fine art in my work.
AP: Yes, that’s definitely true: your pictures are very beautiful and really combine glossy effect and fine art. By the way what genre is your photography?
Alena: I started with still-life, and then somehow moved quickly to people. Still-life wasn’t good to me and it wasn’t very talkative, not like models (laughing). Now I work in advertising, fashion, portraits, beauty, art and travel photography. I work with celebrities.
AP: How would you describe your pictures?
Alena: I think they are the mix of high art and modern photography.
AP: What kind of equipment and techniques do you use to take your pictures?
Alena: I use Canon lenses, often working with Hensel lighting. I cannot be attributed to the photographers who are obsessed with technique and some special techniques shooting. I like shooting dynamic and lively stories. My models are, more often, bright, bold, and sometimes even aggressive. I love catchy photos that are memorable.
AP: That’s a nice approach, Alena. Which artists do you use for references?
Alena: Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Paolo Roversi and Steven Meisel – my favorite ones.
AP: Do you have any dream project? What is it?
Alena: I’d like to work with major fashion brands, celebrities like Madonna, Angelina Jolie.
AP: We wish you dream to definitely come true! What is the formula for success in your activity?
Alena: I think that is observation, sense of purpose and healthy ambitions. I take part in different competitions; try to find time for my own creative projects.
AP: Is there someone who supports you in your creativity?
Alena: I’m very grateful to my family for their support at the beginning of the way, especially my mother, who instilled in me the desire to be a winner.
